Laser Hair Removal Q & A

What is laser hair removal?

The Cynosure Icon laser system uses intense pulsed light (IPL) technology that destroys body hair follicles without damaging surrounding tissue. The damaged hair follicle becomes inactive. As a result, hair no longer grows from the follicle.

Laser hair removal is effective in treating unwanted body hair on your:

  • Face

  • Arms

  • Neck

  • Legs

  • Back

  • Chest

Using the specialized Icon handpiece, the physicians can also treat your underarms and bikini area.

What can I expect during the hair removal process?

You receive laser treatments in a comfortable office environment. The doctors use the MaxR handpiece to cover the treatment areas, setting the laser strength to accommodate the color and texture of your hair.

During treatment, you may feel a slight stinging sensation similar to snapping a rubber band against your skin when the doctors apply the laser. They can apply a numbing cream to the treatment area beforehand. The Icon system also offers a cooling system to keep you comfortable during treatment.

The MaxR handpiece can treat large areas of skin in a short period of time. Actual treatment time depends on the size and location of the treatment area, as well as the texture and color of your hair and skin.

How do I care for the treated area after the procedure?

Following treatment, your skin may feel as if you have a slight sunburn. You can use ice to reduce discomfort during the first day after treatment. Your skin may appear flaky and dry. A high-quality moisturizing lotion can help soften skin and prevent irritation.

It’s important to keep the treated area out of the sun for several weeks after treatment. You also need to apply an SPF sunscreen to the treated area if you’re going to be outside.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments you need depends on the color and texture of your hair, where the hair is located, and how much hair you have. During your initial treatment, not all of the hair follicles will be active. The laser can only destroy follicles that are active, so subsequent treatments may be needed to ensure the doctors can target newly active hair follicles and further reduce the growth of unwanted body hair.
